LATEST INTERNATIONAL NEWS ON THE CORONAVIRUS

The first item figuring, internationally, in the news is the coronavirus disease and its repercussions.

A doctor in Milan describes the last moments of coronavirus patients, who remain lucid until the end of their lives and ask to talk to their beloved families and friends.  Other doctors, during exhausting shifts,  have shared harrowing tales of the battle the death toll is taking.  "It is dramatic to see the patients dying alone and listening to them as they beg to say goodbye to their children and grandchildren", they told the press.  This is the most dramatic part of the whole situation not being able to bid farewell to one's loved ones.

Italy has seen the worst coronavirus outbreak, besides China, with more than 800 deaths and 12.462 cases infected with this terrible disease.

President Donald Trump said that the USA will soon start a coronavirus testing.   Apparently,  the Hollywood studios are reacting to the coronavirus pandemic by delaying large releases of films, because people have stopped going to the cinema.

The popular film actor Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson, have both been tested positive for the coronavirus.  They are, obviously, in isolation, they follow the advice of experts and say that they are very well taken care of.  Mr Hanks thanked the doctors and nurses for their exemplary concern while working around the clock.

Also, the wife of the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, Sophie, is said to be suffering "mild symptoms" of the virus and is put into quarantine, Mr Trudeau will also be in quarantine for 2 weeks.

Nepal has closed all its Himalayan peaks prohibiting foreign tourists from climbing, until the end of spring, due to this terrible ailment.

All international sports events, such as football, rugby, basketball. netball, squash and tennis matches etc have been cancelled.

Ireland will close all schools, colleges, and children's facilities until the end of March.

The coronavirus pandemic has taken over 500 lives, daily, around the world, overloading hospitals, shutting schools, offices, halting rallies and world sports, while increasing fears about the financial toll. There are 155.812 cases,  5.814 deaths and 74.264 recoveries worldwide.

While Washington scrambled to shape an economic rescue package, the European Union pushed back against Donald Trump's sharp restrictions on travel from Europe to the USA.  They slammed Trump's "unilateral" decision and declared the virus a "global crisis" which requires global cooperation.

Sir Patric Valance, England's chief scientific adviser has defended the government's approach to tackling the coronavirus, saying the aim is to create "herd immunity" across the population,  Critics, including the former health secretary Jeremy Hunt, has expressed great concern about the government's decision to delay more drastic measures, like school closures.  It seems absurd that Britain is not closing educational institutions in order to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

Do not panic, but remember what happened in the past.  Bocaccio described the horrific events of the Black Plague (1348-1350) where people died at a terrific rate. The citizens of the day attributed the plague to the unfavourable alignment of the planets and to divine wrath....  50 million people died of the Black Plague, 60% of Europe's population.

The Spread of the Black Plague from 1346-1353

Greece has taken very strict measures against the virus. We already have 228 confirmed cases, 2 recoveries and 3 deaths. All educational institutions, libraries, sports installations, all shops (except pharmacies and supermarkets *with restrictions)  restaurants, bars, playfields and churches will remain closed.  The wife of the government spokesman, Mr Petsas, has been tested positive for the coronavirus and is in quarantine as well as her husband.

We must refrain from circulating.  Scrub our hands regularly with soap and hot water, avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth and stay at home for two months at least. Researchers and scientists are working constantly trying to discover a vaccine or medicament against this deadly disease.  So, please be very careful but also optimistic because we hope and pray that this disaster will end, in the not so distant future.

*They open with only 2 clients at a time for the pharmacies and 5 clients at a time for supermarkets.

(I wish to thank ERT, SKY TV Greece, FRANCE 24, Deutsche Welle, BBC, Aljazeera, CNN and local and international press like Kathimerini, Estia, The Times, The Guardian and the New York Times for the valuable information for this post)

A few flowers for the sick, wishing them a quick and total recovery.
