COVID - 19 (Coronavirus Disease) A CONTEMPORARY PLAGUE?

The WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION called the contagiousness of the coronavirus disease "deeply concerning" as many more countries reported their first cases of the coronavirus disease, which has killed 3.500 people and infected more than 100.000 across 92 countries and territories.

The Great Princess

Apparently, in South Korea, the authorities reported hundreds of new cases bringing the total above 7.000, while the USA is struggling to avoid an outbreak of the disease in the country after, 21 people have tested positive for the virus on the Great Princess cruise ship. According to Reuters, the Great Princes is circling off the west coast California, near San Fransisco, while coronavirus tests are being carried out and it is uncertain what will happen with the numerous passengers and crew on board.

The majority of the cases were reported in mainland China but the rapid augmentation of the infection has naturally triggered panic across the globe.  This terrible disease also has intense international economical repercussions, as firms and businesses have, unfortunately, shut down, factories have stopped working and famous commercial exhibitions have been cancelled or postponed.

We have dear friends, rather dear relatives who are and will be permanent residents of Beijing for the next four years, our thoughts and prays are with them but, now, we are reassured that they will be doing exactly what we all do daily, against this terrible disease.  Our love to your dear friends, and "kalo couragio" to all of us.

The new virus spreads chiefly through respiratory droplets such as those when an infected person coughs or sneezes.  So you must avoid visiting patients, scrub your hands thoroughly, many time a day, do not touch your eyes, nose and mouth and do not come in contact with large gatherings.  It takes about five or six days for someone to show symptoms after contracting the disease, however, some people who carry the virus remain asymptomatic, which is very dangerous because they can infect people without knowing that they carriers.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that the most common symptoms are fever, fatigue and a dry cough.  A third of the patients checked also reported muscle pains and difficulty in breathing, while about 10% had atypical symptoms of diarrhoea and nausea.

Greece, trying to halt the spread of the coronavirus disease, have closed schools and universities in parts of the country which have been hardly struck by this appalling ailment. The National Public Health Organization said the shutdown included the"suspension of all public gatherings" such as theatres, museums, cinemas and sporting events.

Patients range in ages from 22-92, however, cases of the coronavirus disease in children are, fortunately, rare.  Also, less than 2% of the total amount of infected people have died of the virus, mainly due to health complications and old age. Therefore, we should not panic because it doesn't help, and let us all hope and pray that in the very near future a vaccine or medicament will be discovered and produced against this terrible contemporary plague.
