CHRYSANTHOS CHRISTOU died peacefully, at his home in Athens on the 25th January, 2016. Devoted husband of Katerina, beloved father of our Yianna and Spiros and Maria, proud grandfather and great-grandfather of Alexandros and Tina, Konstantinos, Stephanos, Chryssa, Katerina and Spiros and little Janna and Sophia, dear brother of Dimitris, Eleni and Lykourgos, Vangelis and Evie.
He was much loved, admired and respected and will be greatly missed by his family, friends, old students and the Greek intelligentsia.
CHRYSANTHOS CHRISTOU was born in Thespies, Boeotia in 1922. He studied History and Archaeology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens and was in charge of Classical Archaeology in various parts of Greece. He won a scholarship of the German Government (D.A.A.D.) for postgraduate studies in Ancient and Contemporary Art at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne. In 1965, he became a professor of History of Medieval and Contemporary Art at the University of Thessaloniki. It was the first time that this science was established in a Greek university. In 1979, he was appointed Professor for the same Seat in the University of Athens, where he taught with passion and dedication, until his retirement. In 1991, he was proclaimed a member of the Academy of Athens in the Seat of History of Art.
He wrote umpteen books, concerning European Art from the Renaissance to Present Times. Also, Greek History of Art of the 19th and 20th centuries.
